Men's Soccer Can't Keep Pace with Nassau - Eliminated From Playoffs as They Fall 5-1

October 28, 2022
Garden City, NY – The Men's Soccer team's season came to a disappointing end on Wednesday as they were defeated by top seeded Nassau Community College 5-1.  Though the match was close for much of 2nd half, the Lions pulled away late to seal the victory.  Westchester had high hopes for the matchup, as earlier in the season they were narrowly defeated 2-1 by the #4 team in the country.

The Vikings found themselves behind almost immediately as Nassau kept scoring pressure on for much of the first half.  At the 13-minute mark, Silas Stewart Caws of NCC sent a shot through heavy traffic in the 18-yard box that Keeper Nicolas Nunez (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) had little chance of deflecting as he saw it late.  15 minutes later, Westchester committed a foul in the box resulting in a converted penalty kick by Nassau.  The score remained 2-0 heading into the half.

Westchester got back into the match on a breakaway by Exon Umanzor (Ossining, NY/Ossinings HS).  Umanzor controlled a ball that Nassau attempted to settle and beat the last defender to blast a shot past the keeper to get the Vikings on the board and pull to 2-1.  The team kept their chances of tying the game alive until the 75th minute, when the Lions scored off of a header to extend the lead to 3-1.  From there, Nassau scored twice within the last 8 minutes to send the Vikings home for the season.

The 2022 Men's Soccer team finishes the season with an 8-9 overall record.  They appeared in the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship game for the 7th straight season and had several signature wins and close losses.
