(North East, MD) - Freshman
Weston Baronian (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) collected three more hits and scored twice, and freshman
Anthony Dolce (North Salem, NY/North Salem HS) hit his first career home run, but the Westchester Community College Baseball team was swept by Cecil College, 15-0 and 7-6 on Sunday, to close their season-opening Maryland trip with a 1-3 record.
The opener saw Cecil (3-5) score at least two runs each inning en route to a five-inning victory. For the Vikings, Baronian and
Jace Deiulio (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland HS) each collected extra base hits, while freshman
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester HS) reached base twice.
The second game looked for a while like a repeat of the opener, as Cecil jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, but the Vikings rallied to make things interesting, just falling short. In the fourth inning, a
Bobby Beaton (White Plains, NY/Eastchester HS) single brought home Baronian to make it 6-1. After Cecil made it 7-1 during the bottom of the fifth inning, Osso scored on a wild pitch during the top of the sixth inning to make it 7-2.
Things heated up during the top of the seventh inning. With the Vikings down to their final out,
Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS), Baronian, and Osso hit consecutive singles, driving in Frias, to make it 7-3. Up next was Dolce, who blasted his first career home run to left field to make it 7-6. However, that was as close as the Vikings would make it.
Frias, Baronian, and Dolce had two hits apiece. The Vikings also had a terrific effort by freshman pitcher
Michael Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS), who came on in relief, and allowed one earned run on five hits, striking out six over four innings of work.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, March 5 for their first home game in two years and a day as the Vikings welcome SUNY Adirondack for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. Westchester and Adirondack will face-off for two doubleheaders during the weekend, with Sunday's twinbill beginning at 11:00 a.m.
