Game Recap: Baseball |

No Suspence: Baseball downs Rockland CC 9-7 to earn doubleheader split as sophomore earns career day

(Nyack, NY) - Sophomore CJ Spence (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) enjoyed perhaps the finest game of his career, going 3 for 4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, and freshman Michael Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) added three hits and three runs scored as the Westchester Community College Baseball team opened a Saturday doubleheader with NJCAA Region XV foe, Rockland CC, with a 9-7 win on Saturday afternoon. Both games were played at Nyack High School.

During the opener, Westchester CC fell behind 3-0 and then 5-2 after four innings, but the Vikings rallied for a run during the fifth inning, five more during the sixth inning, and a run during the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-5 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. The Hawks rallied for two runs during the bottom of the seventh inning, but got no closer.

Spence's three hits tied a career high. Two of his hits were doubles, and he also drew a walk.

Also for the Vikings, freshman Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) went 1 for 3 with a walk and two RBI's.

Freshman Thomas Browne (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville HS) pitched six strong innings to improve to 3-3, as he allowed six earned runs, and struck out two, while walking only two. Ambrosecchia earned his third save of the season, striking out two during one inning of work.

The nightcap turned into another wild affair between the two teams. Less than 24 hours after Westchester CC survived a 21-18 slugfest between the two teams, Rockland came out ahead this time, 17-16.

Rockland (14-10, 5-2) led 7-1 after two innings, but Westchester CC scored three runs during the third inning, and four runs an inning later, to take an 8-7 lead. However, Rockland then rallied for six runs during the fourth inning, and four more during the fifth inning to take a 17-8 lead.

But, the Vikings weren't finished. Westchester scored five runs during the sixth inning, and three more runs during the seventh inning to make it 17-16, but Westchester's rally fell just short, and Rockland secured the win.

Hopper, and freshman Lucas Feliciano (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas HS) had two hits and four RBI's apiece. Ambrosecchia had two hits, and three RBI's, while freshman Anthony Dolce (North Salem, NY/North Salem HS) went 2 for 3 with two walks, two RBI's, and three runs scored.

After Sunday's series finale between the two teams was postponed, the make-up will be on Monday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m. at Vikings Field.
