Baseball Falls 17-15 to Rockland CC in 2022 Series Finale

(Valhalla, NY) - 16 hours of play, three different venues, and 120 runs scored later, the 2022 NJCAA Region XV Division II Baseball series between Westchester Community College is over ... and for the Earned Run Averages of both programs, the ending could not have come an inning sooner. Naturally, one of the most bizarre and dramatic series that will be seen anywhere across college baseball ended in a 2-2 split. However, if these two teams are somehow destined to see each other again in the post-season, expect a little bit of everything during those games ... so as long as there is enough daylight.

Sophomore CJ Spence (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) hit another home run, and drove in five total runs, and freshmen Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) and Michael Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) each had three hits, but Rockland CC closed the four-game set with a 17-15 win over Westchester CC on Monday afternoon at Viking Field. With the loss, Westchester is now 13-11 overall for the 2022 season, and 2-2 against Mid-Hudson Conference/NJCAA Region XV competition.

Monday's game marked the third time over four games that the two teams combined for more than 30 runs, this time with Rockland opening a 7-0 lead during the top of the first inning, and then spending the rest of the game holding off a feisty Vikings team. The Hawks led 15-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Westchester scored two during the seventh inning, and four runs an inning later to make it a 15-12 game. After Rockland scored twice during the top of the ninth inning to make it 17-12, Westchester scored three times during the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit to two runs, but the Vikings could not make it any closer.

Ambrosecchia and Frias scored three times apiece.

Also for the Vikings, freshman Weston Baronian (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) went 2 for 4 with four RBI's and three runs scored, while freshman Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) went 2 for 5 with three RBI's. Hopper and freshman Jace Deiulio (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland HS) also combined to pitch more than four innings, allowing only one earned run.

Westchester Community College returns to action on Tuesday, April 12 as Region XV/Mid-Hudson Conference play continues when Westchester CC welcomes Sullivan Community College for a 3:30 p.m. start at Vikings Field.
