(Valhalla, NY) - Freshman
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester HS) went 5 for 6, scored four runs, and struck out two during three innings of work, and freshman
Weston Baronian (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) went 3 for 5 with four RBI's and two runs scored, but the Westchester Community College Baseball team lost its sixth straight game, 16-14 to Dutchess Community College on Thursday afternoon at Vikings Field. With the loss, Westchester CC is now 19-17 overall, and 8-8 against NJCAA Region XV competition.
Westchester got off to a fast start, scoring five runs over the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead, but from there, the Vikings struggled defensively during a windy day at Vikings Field, opening the door for a comeback by the visiting Falcons.
Dutchess (2-18, 2-15) scored eight runs during the third inning to go ahead 8-5, and then used a five-run sixth inning to turn a 9-7 edge into an insurmountable 14-7 lead. Dutchess was aided by six Viking errors that led to 10 unearned runs.
Westchester fought to the end, scoring seven runs over the final four innings - including three during the bottom of the ninth inning - to make things closer, but were unable to complete the comeback. Baronian singled home two runs during the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 14-9. An inning later,
Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) singled home a run, and
Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 15-11.
The bottom of the ninth inning saw things get even more interesting as Baronian doubled home Osso, and
AJ Falciglia followed with his fourth home run of the season for the 16-14 final.
The game marked the 15th time this season that Westchetser score 10+ runs during a game.
Four different pitchers combined to allow only six earned runs, and strike out 12. Freshman
Michael Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) threw three terrific innings in relief, allowing one run, while striking out seven.
Westchester CC and Dutchess CC meet again on Friday, April 29 at 3:30 pm at Vikings Field.
