Dolce Vita: Baseball Team Survives 21-18 Marathon Win over Rockland CC to open Region XV as Freshman play as Dolce drives in five

Apr 9

Box Score (Purchase, NY) - The way Friday night's game went, if the Westchester Community College Baseball team ever rents the Baseball field at Purchase College again, hotel reservations might be a good idea ... even though Purchase College is mere minutes from the Westchester CC campus. Four hours, 39 runs, and one of the most wild and memorable games in Region XV history later, the Westchester Community College Baseball team is 1-0 in region play, surviving a 21-18 roller coaster ride of a marathon over Rockland Community College on Friday evening - ummmm Saturday morning - at Purchase College. With the win, Westchester CC is now 12-9 overall.

Forced to find an alternate location due to field conditions after Thursday night's torrential rain, Purchase College's facility became available for an 8:30 p.m. start on Friday night, and for a while, it seemed as if the evening would actually end early, as a nine-run bottom of the third inning gave Westchester a 9-3 lead, leaving hope that a shortened game was on the horizon. Little did Vikings fans know that by the time the game would ultimately end, breakfast would actually be what appeared on the horizon. Rockland (13-9, 4-1) scored twice during the top of the fourth inning to make it 9-5, and then took the lead when they scored six runs during the top of the fifth inning to make it 11-9 game. After the Vikings made it an 11-10 game during the bottom of the frame, Rockland scored six more times during the top of the sixth inning to take a 17-10 lead.

But, the game was not nearly over at that point, not by a long-shot. Westchester scored four times during the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 17-14, and tied the game at 17 with three runs during the bottom of the seventh inning. After the Hawks took an 18-17 lead during the top of the eighth inning, Westchester secured the win with a four-run bottom of the eighth inning for the 21-18 final.

Incredibly, what made the game even more wild was that, despite allowing 18 runs, the Viking pitching staff enjoyed one of their finest games of the season, holding Rockland to only three earned runs, as most of Rockland's runs came on the heels of seven Viking errors. Freshman Ryan Osso (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester HS) earned his first career win, allowing only one base-runner over two spectacular innings. He relieved freshman Thomas Mark (Patterson, NY/Brewster HS), who pitched the first four innings, allowing two earned runs. Freshman John Peteani (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) allowed only a single earned run over two innings of work.

Westchester CC combined for 19 hits as freshman Anthony Dolce (North Salem, NY/North Salem HS) went 2 for 5 with a home run, a double, five RBI's, and four runs scored. Freshman Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) went 4 for 6 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Freshman Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) went 3 for 6 with a home run, two RBI's, and three runs scored.

Overall, seven different Vikings had at least two hits.

The two teams meet again on Saturday, April 9 when they play a doubleheader at Nyack High School, beginning at 3:00 p.m. If all goes well, the final pitch will occur well in advance of Sunday's season finale between the two teams at 12:00 p.m. at Westchester CC.
