Untied! – Umanzor’s Late Strike Called Offsides as Vikings Fall Just Short.

September 26, 2022
Garden City, NY – Westchester's strong play versus top teams continued Saturday, as they traveled to Mitchell Field to take on the perennial national contending Nassau Lions.  The teams played a tight matchup but in the end the Vikings fell just short as an apparent equalizing goal with less than 6 minutes left was called off due to an offsides.

The match remained scoreless for the better part of the first half, but it was Nassau who notched the first score in the 38th minute.  But just 3 minutes after half time, Sophomore Jason Otiniano (White Plains, NY/Valhalla HS) tied the game with his 2nd goal of the season to make it 1-1.

At 65 minutes, Nassau sent a hard shot that was redirected off of a Viking defender that found the back of the goal to take the lead.  As the half wound down, Westchester worked deep in the Lion's half when a cross came into the box.  As several players missed the header, the ball ended up at the top of the 18-yard box and Exon Umanzor (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) fired a shot past the Nassau goalkeeper and into the net.  The play happened so fast though that a Westchester striker was still recovering from the missed header on the ball before was behind the last Nassau defender.  As a result, the game tying goal was called off and Nassau held on to win.

In the loss, Nicolas Nunez (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) had 7 saves in goal as the Vikings fell to 4-4 on the season (4-2 in Region XV).  The team returns to action on Tuesday, September 27th as they travel to Orange Community College for a 4pm start.
