Valhalla, NY – What was a beautiful day on Barrett Field turned into a nightmare for the Vikings yesterday afternoon against cross-river rival Rockland Community College. Westchester would fall 1-0 to the Hawks, compromising their chances to move forward into the postseason both for the Conference and Regionals.
On a day where eight sophomores were celebrated for their hard work and dedication during their two-years for the men's soccer program, emotions seemed positive and eager for a win. The Hawks (6-6-0, 6-5-0) had other plans for the Vikings.
The first half would be a back-and-forth battle of possession with both teams looking to get on the scoreboard first. Rockland would outshoot SUNY WCC 5-3 while the Vikings edged them in corner kicks 3-2.
Nicholas Nunez would come up big with four saves in the first half.
Halftime rolled around and starting the second half, the intensity of the game gratified. More back and forth battles ensued until a penalty kick was awarded to Rockland in the 56
th minute. Nunez was brought back to last year in the Region 15 Quarterfinals when the game would ultimately come down to a shootout against Borough of Manhattan. The Hawks Jason Mizirumbay would squib the ball past the diving Nunez for ultimately the lone goal of the game. Westchester would outshoot Rockland 6-3 in the second half however in total, only three of the Vikings nine shots would be on goal.
Westchester looks to end the season on a high note against a tough regional opponent in Nassau Community College at home tomorrow at 4pm on Barrett Field.
