After a promising start to the 2023 men's soccer campaign, the season came to an abrupt end on Thursday as they fell to Nassau Community College 3-1. After a 6-3 start to the season, Westchester lost their last four games. Despite the score, the Vikings played perhaps their best game of the season against NCC, hanging in with the #4 team in the country until the final buzzer.
Nassau got off to a strong start, as they converted on a strong shot in the 14
th minute. They struck again in the 36
th after a defensive breakdown allowed the Lion striker to beat Goalkeeper Nicolas Nunez (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) one on one. From there though, Westchester was able to fend off several scoring chances by NCC, as they took 8 corner kicks in the 1
st period and were unable to convert on any.
Nassau then looked to break the game open as they found the back of the net just 10 minutes into the 2
nd to extend their lead to 3-0. Just six minutes later, Handel Dos Santos (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. Vernon HS) beat the last defender to chip a ball past the drawn-out Nassau keeper, to put he Vikings on the Board. Westchester had a couple of solid scoring chances late as they hoped to equalize the game but were unable to convert as the clock wound down to the finish. Nunez ended his sophomore season by making 11 saves in the game.
With the loss, Westchester was eliminated from the playoffs based on the new for 2023 6-team format. The Vikings end the season 6-7 overall but look ahead to having several promising freshmen return next year as build for next year.
