Women’s Volleyball Drops the First of a Pair of MHC Matchups

Oct 13

Box Score October 13, 2023 – Valhalla, NY
In what was perhaps their most contested match of the season, Westchester's Women's Volleyball team fell just short of extending to a 5th and deciding game versus Ulster on Thursday, falling 3-1 (23-25, 22-25,25-18, 23-25).  Both teams looked evenly match throughout with the outcome in question in all but the one game WCC won.

After falling behind early in game 1, the Vikings stormed back to take a lead as the set wore on.  It looked like there was a chance to take an early 1-0 match lead, but the team faded late and fell behind.  Game 2 was more of the same as it played out in similar fashion.  The set featured more back and forth but it was Ulster who again closed it out late.

Westchester pulled ahead in game 3 and never looked back as they extended their lead late to stay in the mach.  The Vikings seemed poised to force a deciding game 5 as they seemingly reached a 23-20 lead, but the ref's called a redo on a contested call that would have given them just two points to go to even the match.  But after the point was taken off the board, a sideout by Ulster gave them the ball and the momentum as they tied and eventually won 25-23.

Julia Pawlowicz (Hawthorne, NY/Ursuline) led the Vikings with 16 kills and 4 aces.  Gabriella Cresti Caetano (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers) had 12 kills of her own and was flawless on service attempts with no errors.  Velina Greco (Tampa, FL/Valhalla HS) led the team with 17 digs and 3 kills.

With the loss, Westchester falls to 7-5 on the year.  The Vikings get another shot at Ulster on Monday, but first they travel to Kingsborough Community College on Saturday to take on KCC and Queensborough in a double-dual matchup at 12 noon.
