December 8, 2023 – Valhalla, NY
As the semester comes to a close the SUNY Westchester Esports team is finishing up the fall 2023 season with playoff appearances in the SUNY Tournament.
Emerging this fall was a very competitive Super Smash Bro's team. In a field of 54 teams, WCC's
Victor Farias aka "Victory" entered the postseason as the #2 seed. He defeated Suffolk "Fazbearsmall" in the opening round 2-1 then SUNY Purchase "Smash 5" in the 2
nd 2-1. In the Quarterfinals he bested SUNY Orange "SSB" 2-1 and topped Purchase "Smash 4" in the Semifinals. This set up a matchup of the top 2 seeds in the tournament with "Victory" squaring off against Fredonia's SB "Pengu". Vic was narrowly defeated 3-2 and finished as the runner up.
The defending SUNY Esports Champion Vikings made another deep run in the playoffs in Valorant. The Vikings avoided the play-in round when they entered the tournament as the 11 seed. They then upset #6 SUNY Poly 2-0. But the team ultimately fell 2-0 in the quarterfinal round of play against Farmingdale State, eliminating them from the championships. Incidentally, Farmingdale State went on to win it all versus SUNY Albany.
The Overwatch team suffered the same fate. After securing the #4 seed, they beat #13 Fredonia to earn a shot at #5 SUNY Canton. In a closely contested match, they lost 3-1 to the perennial contender, knocking them out of the playoffs.
The last team competing is WCC's Apex Legends team which ranks 3
rd in their pool with 11 points after the regular season. The playoffs begin next week and the entire WCC community wishes them luck as they look for a spot on the SUNY Championship podium.
