Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Sour Citrus. Vikings Fall in Fifth Set to SUNY Orange

Valhalla, NY – The 2023 Women's Volleyball season got underway last night in a crowded Viking Gymnasium as the Vikings took on Mid-Hudson Conference foe SUNY Orange. In an exciting battle that ultimately came down to the fifth and final set of the match, Westchester came up just short against the visiting Colts 3-2.

SUNY WCC started the night off strong with a 25-20 first set victory over SUNY Orange. With the game one jitters seemingly to be out, the Vikings would take the second set 25-17 and were looking for the opening night sweep. The Colts would have other plans for the evening.

Set number three would open with SUNY Orange taking a 9-3 lead before the first timeout called by the Vikings. Westchester would get as close as a point down before Orange would come away with the 25-18 victory pushing the match to a fourth set.

SUNY Orange once again would open the fourth set to an 11-3 lead before Westchester would claw their way back down 19-18. From there the Vikings would only be able to score two more points and fall to the Colts 25-20.

The deciding fifth set comes into play. For those who do not follow volleyball often, the fifth set is slightly different than your normal first to 25 game. Teams flip a coin with the referee's to determine who starts with service rights. Then teams rally to eight (8) points to which then they switch sides. Following the switch, the match comes down to the first to 15 points with a win by two point margin. Last night's last set started off with a point for point battle before SUNY Orange taking a 6-2 lead. Westchester would cut the lead down to a score of 7-5 before the Colts notched the eighth point. The Vikings gave it their all on the court however fell just short 15-9 to SUNY OCC. The loss moves SUNY WCC to 0-1 on the year.

The Vikings were led by Sophomore Gabriella Cresti Caetano (Yonkers HS/Yonkers, NY) who had 10 kills on the evening as well as five blocks and eight digs. Alison Lara (Sleepy Hollow HS/Sleepy Hollow, NY) added four kills and six digs in the loss.

Westchester looks to continue to work out the kinks and look forward to their next match on Tuesday September 12th at home against Mid-Hudson Conference and Regional opponent Rockland Community College. Game time will be at 7pm.
