Box Score Long Island City, NY – Powered by a career-high 24 points from
Wyatt Triestman, the Vikings were able to hold off LaGuardia Community College Thursday evening 76-73 to improve to 7-11 on the year.
SUNY Westchester, coming off an epic win over Northern Essex six days ago, seemed to really start the team mold together as a unit. However, the Vikings almost saw that great team victory fall short at Red Hawk Gymnasium. WCC was down as much as 12 points to LaGuardia in the first half. Turnovers and missed opportunities have plagued them throughout the year but thankfully, there are two halves in basketball. Heading into halftime, the Vikings were down by 11, 41-30, looking to turn on their offense in the second half.
Just as this story seems to be scripted, SUNY Westchester came out of halftime on a mission. They would tie the game at 47 with 13:48 left on the clock and took their first lead of the game with just under 12 minutes remaining. The Vikings would go up by as much as 10 on the Red Hawks with 37 seconds remaining, thinking that sealed the game. LaGuardia had other plans. The Red Hawks would hit some last-second three-pointers to cut the game to within three, however, Westchester would hold onto the victory.
Outside of Triestman's career-high 24 points, the Vikings were also led by
Yenfry Paulino who had 22 points, and
Jaiden Brown who added 13 points. Westchester would shoot 78% as a team from the free-throw line.
The Vikings have another decent break before their next game when they host the Mustangs of Monroe College on Thursday January 25
th, for a 7pm tip-off.
