Valhalla, NY – Men's soccer ended their regular season with a 1-0 win over Bergen Community College while honoring seven sophomores Saturday afternoon.
In what has been the most successful season in program history, you really wouldn't be able to tell by Head Coaches
Alfio Carrabotta's emotions. Carrabotta has very much downplayed how successful the Vikings have been this season, even noting when SUNY WCC became ranked within the top 10 a few weeks ago. "It's nice and the team deserves it, but I like to fly under the radar," Carrabotta said.
Coming into Saturday's match against the Bulldogs, Westchester had eight wins, one loss, and three ties, with the chance to notch one more victory before the post season. Before the start of the match, the team honored seven sophomore's who would be playing in their last regular season match on Barrett Field: Brian Moales,
Oliver Tecuapetla,
Maximos Matailo,
Henri Novick,
Israel Pardo,
Zane Bramson, and
Petr Klaus.
The game would commence and it wouldn't take long before a familiar name would net the first, and eventually only, Viking goal.
Demoni Gordon would score on a penalty kick in the 15
th minute giving Westchester a 1-0 lead. The rest of the match would see shots on goal but none that would hit the back of the net for either team.
Jonathan Bautista would earn the goalkeeper victory for SUNY Westchester.
The Vikings now look forward to the postseason beginning on Tuesday October 22
nd when they'll travel to Rondout Valley High School to take on SUNY Ulster in the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship game. The match will begin at 7pm.
Westchester will then look to host a Division 3 Region 15 Quarterfinal game on Saturday October 26
th. More information in regards to that game will come in the coming days.
