Vikings Mourn the Loss of Michael Bellantoni

Oct 8

October 7, 2024 – Valhalla, NY
SUNY Westchester Athletics is saddened to hear of the passing of Football standout, Mike Bellantoni.  As one of the most revered members of the 72-74 Football teams, Mike came to WCC as a standout player from Sleepy Hollow High School.  He began his football career with the Vikings as Wide Receiver before moving to Defensive Back and Kick Returner.  For the 1974 season he earned All-Conference and All-American accolades as he established school records in interceptions (9), and punt returns (18).  He would average 15 yards per return which included two back for touchdowns.

According to his coach's account in the 1974 Recap program "Mike's tremendous overall ability will make him and outstanding asset to his (4-year college) of choice.  Aside from his great athletic ability, he is the kind of person that is a pleasure to coach and to know"

After his time in the Blue and Orange, he moved on to play at Southern Illinois University where he earned his degree.  Upon graduating from SIU, he went on to work in the recreation field.

To this day, the WCC football team alumni enjoy a strong brotherhood.  Dating back to around 2008, former players from the late 1960's and 70's began an annual tradition of holding a Reunion Barbeque on campus.  Bellantoni was one of the members who would make it a priority to consistently attend each and every year.  His presence at these events and friendship to his teammates will be sorely missed.

Mike is predeceased by his wife Betty, who he met at SUNY Westchester and later married.  He is survived by his son Anthony.  Information about memorial services will be forthcoming.  His life will also be celebrated at the 2024 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on November 22nd, where fellow football alumni Don Scarcella and John Caruso will be inducted.  More information about the Sports Hall of Fame could be found by clicking here
