Valhalla, NY – Women's Basketball picked up a victory over SUNY Orange last night by the score of 62-53.
The Vikings would take an early lead on the Colts in the first quarter thanks to five points from
Destini Norman.
Krismelis Melo also got in on the action for SUNY WCC adding four points in the quarter. Westchester's defense held SUNY Orange to shooting 17% on the floor while forcing 10 turnovers.
The second quarter saw much of the same for SUNY WCC with the ladies going on a 10-0 run between the 6:22 and 1:29 mark adding to their lead over Orange. Heading into halftime the Vikings led 34-19 thanks to another 10 points from Norman and the team hitting 72% of their free-throws. Westchester once again held the Colts to 26% shooting on the floor while forcing 11 turnovers.
Coming out of halftime the Viking offense went ice cold with the Colts going on a 10-0 run to tie the score at 38 with 2:30 left in the third. The game would then be a back and forth battle with Westchester gaining the lead back with four seconds left before the buzzer.
Milagros Alston would score four points out of the Vikings eight total points in the quarter. Turnovers were key against SUNY WCC as well as the Lady Vikings shooting 21% from the floor.
The final quarter of play saw SUNY WCC start off on a 6-0 run to pad their lead back up to eight points before a Colt layup. The Viking lead would be cut down to as low as four points before the Westchester defense held up and locked in the victory.
Overall, Westchester was led by Norman who had a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Baronique Russel and Alston would add 12 points each while
Chynna Mincey added four points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Vikings look to play their next game on Thursday February 15
th when they welcome the Generals of SUNY Sullivan for a 5pm game here in Viking Gymnasium.
