This past weekend, the Vikings hosted Suffolk County Community College in a doubleheader, where Westchester took the win in the earlier game, 11-1, and fell closely behind in the second, 6-5.
The first game kicked off with the Suffolk Sharks striking first, scoring one run in the first inning. Westchester Community College wasted no time responding, igniting an offensive surge that saw eight Vikings cross home plate in the bottom half of the first inning. The next three innings would be quiet, with neither team scoring any runs. Westchester added to its lead with three more runs between the fifth and sixth innings, sealing a dominant 11-1 victory. Four Vikings—Freddy Heymach, Peter Portugues, Brandon Hernandez, and Michael Tiseo—each tallied two runs, while Randel Weisner, Nick Vendola, and Elijah Villanueva chipped in with one each. On the mound, Michael Dawson delivered a stellar performance, pitching all six innings and obtaining an impressive eight strikeouts.
After the big win in game one, the Vikings went into the second game feeling confident. SUNY Westchester would score the first run of the game in the second inning, followed by two more runs in the next. Thanks to strong pitchers like Vailios Kelesidis, who racked up eight strikeouts during the game, the Sharks were unable to get any hits in. During the fifth inning, the Vikings added another run to their lead, making the score 4-0. However, things quickly changed in the seventh and final inning; Suffolk County managed to score six runs, taking the lead by two. In the bottom of the seventh, Westchester had one last chance to take the lead back. Ultimately, they were only able to score one run, falling short by just one point. Two of WCC's runs were scored by Lucas Feliciano while Randel Weisner, Michael Tiseo, and Elijah Villanueva each contributed one each.Â
The Vikings have a busy week ahead, first playing Dominican University of New York on March 11th at 3:30pm at Vikings Field in Valhalla, NY.Â
