Softball is Back at WCC

March 30, 2026
Valhalla, NY – A lot can happen in 10 years.  For most of the program's existence, softball was a staple of the athletics here at WCC.  Hall of Fame Coach, Len Spina, led the program for many years until his eventual retirement in 2013.  The program continued thereafter but fellow Hall of Famer Buddy Caruso's 2016 team was the last iteration of a squad that ended up playing a season.  For several years after, the team was offered, but interest was limited and as a result the program was discontinued…….until now.

In September of 2025, Coach Cooper, and Coach Cecil Weatherly were brought on board to get the program up and running.  They worked diligently to put the squad together for this spring.  On Monday, March 30th, the 10-year drought between pitches thrown in a competitive game for the college came to an end.

The Vikings took the field as they welcomed the 2025 Region 15 Champions, SUNY Dutchess for a double header.  They faced the reigning Region 15 Pitcher of the Year, a tough draw for their first time out.  Though the team dropped both games of the double dip, what was important is they took the field.  It was an effort was years in the making.  The final scores did not matter, what did was that the team knew that they laid the first bricks in a foundation that will built strong for the days, months and years to come.

In a day of firsts, Idali Dolores notched the team's first strikeout, Otelia Peart stole the first base, and three sport athlete Meaghan Collins ripped the team's first hit.  And there were many more "firsts".  As the season goes on and the team develops, it is certain there are plenty more to come.

The Vikings begin the season 0-2 and they return to action on Thursday, April 9th when they welcome in Monroe Bronx for a double header.  First pitch will be at 2pm.  For the complete softball schedule, click here.
