Box Score May 4, 2017 – Valhalla, NY
The single game scheduled vs Ulster today was changed to a double header as rain in the forecast would likely to force a cancellation on Friday. As such the teams set out to play a nine and a seven inning twin billing. In addition, the contest was deemed Veteran's Appreciation Day and the ceremonial first pitch was tossed out by no other than WCC's own Pete Sasko from Veteran's Affairs.
In game one, WCC got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the 2nd when CJ Sager (Mahopac HS/Mahopac, NY) scored on an Ulster error. UCC then came back with two unearned runs in the top of the third. But in the bottom of the inning Paul Franzese (Somers HS/Somers, NY) hit a bases clearing triple to extend the lead to 5-2. In the top of the 6th it was the Senators who fought back to tie the game at 6.
In the bottom of the 6th the Vikings retook the lead on a Scottie Giordano's (Croton Harmon HS/Croton, NY) sacrifice fly. Westchester scored two more runs on RBI singles by Brian Corporan (HS for Environmental Studies/Bronx, NY) and Steve Guzman (JFK HS/Bronx, NY) to bring the score to 9-6.
Poor defense would be the Vikings' undoing in the 9th as two errors led to for Ulster as they fell behind headed in to the bottom of the inning. Paul Franzese's clutch RBI single with the team's back against the wall, plated Guzman to send the game into extra innings tied at 10.
In the bottom of the 11th Steve Guzman stepped to the plate hoping to make up for an earlier error that led to a UCC run in the 9th. He would have his redemption when he launched a solo shot off the top of the left center field fence for the game winning home run, sealing the 11-10 win.
Since the extra inning game ended so late, game two has been rescheduled as a 9-inning game on Monday, May 8 at West Field. The team returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Cantine Field in Saugerties, NY for a double header against Ulster, as the series continues. With the win, the Vikings better their season record to 31-11 and 13-4 within the Region.
In light of Veteran Appreciation Day, WCC Athletics would like to thank our veterans and enlisted service men and women for your service.
