Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Groton, CT) - While there is plenty of time and baseball between now and then, if in fact the middle of May will see the Westchester Community College Baseball team face UConn-Avery Point for the right to go to the NJCAA World Series, regardless of who wins, it is going to be quite the battle. After playing four tight games during a seven-day span, the two teams proved that they remain among the elite teams in the region, and the difference between them may come down to one big inning.

On Saturday, the teams split a twin-bill, with the Vikings taking the opener 12-5 before UConn-Avery Point won the second game, 3-2. With the split, WCC is now 8-7.

The opener featured an incredible display by Scottie Giordano (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon HS). The sophomore was dominant in every way, not only earning the win on the mound with 5 2/3 inning of outstanding relief pitching during which he allowed only two unearned runs, but he also had a tremendous day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI's. Giordano, among others, came up big during a five-run fifth inning which saw Westchester break the game wide open. After two UConn errors, Sergio Osorio (North White Plains, NY/Valhalla HS) singled in a run. Giordano followed with a two RBI double to extend the WCC lead. Bobby Wootten (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley HS) and Sean Vanegas (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael_ each added RBI singles to pad the Westchester lead.

Wootten finished the day with three RBI's, while Paul Franzese (Somers, NY/Somers HS) chipped in 3 RBI's as well, including a two-RBI double in the third innings.

Giordano earned the win after relieving Nick Antenucci (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac), who pitched well. He allowed three runs, and pitched into the fourth inning when UConn-Avery Point threatened to rally with two baserunners on and only one out. Giordano entered to face the host's best hitter, and promptly induced a double-play to end any hopes of a rally.

The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel with Westchester's Nick Cona (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas HS) turning in a terrific effort. The sophomore pitched into the six inning allowing only one earned run, five hits, and struck out two. However, UConn's bats were just a little bit better than WCC's.

For the Vikings, Giordano went 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Steve Messerschmitt (Carmel, NY/Carmel HS) went 2 for 3.

Westchester Community College returns to action on Thursday, April 5 when the Vikings open Region XV play with a trip to Orange Community College for a 4:00 p.m. single game.
