Box Score 2 (Poughkeepsie, NY) - Four straight wins over a solid Dutchess Community College team, and 49 runs scored later, the Westchester Community College Baseball team emerged from Dutchess Stadium on Saturday night as a team that appears to be hitting its stride at the perfect time. Not only were the Viking bats hotter than they have been all season long, but while achieving their first series sweep of the season, WCC played four complete baseball games, with solid defense and outstanding pitching to go with some clutch hitting.
All of which was on display on Saturday night as the Vikings downed the host Falcons, 20-8 and 5-1. Over four games, WCC outscored Dutchess an incredible 49-13.
Eight of Dutchess's 13 runs calmer during the opener on Saturday evening, a figure that proved to be irrelevant as Westchester scored as season-high 20 of their own.
The game was tight until the fifth. Westchester led 5-2 in the top of the frame when
Scottie Giordano (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon HS) hit a two-out, three-run triple to make it an 8-2 game. A
James Houlahan (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland HS) single scored Giordano to make it 9-2. Dutchess battled back to make it 9-4 at the bottom of the inning, but three more WCC runs put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth inning.
Sergio Osorio (North White Plains, NY/Valhalla HS) brought home
CJ Sager (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) to make it 10-4. After an error scored a run, Giordano hit another triple, this time scoring two runs for a 13-4 edge.
Dutchess scored four time times during the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 13-8, but WCC closed scoring with a seven run seventh inning, highlighted by another bases-loaded triple by Giordano.
Nick Antenucci (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac) picked up his fifth win of the 2018 season on the mound.
Giordano had an incredible day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with 8 RBI's, tripling three times, two of which came with the bases loaded. Houlahan added four hits, while Osorio had three. Overall, the Vikings combined for 20 hits.
The nightcap saw the Westchester bats slow down, but their five runs were more than enough for
Triston Olmo (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley HS), who turned in yet another gem. The sophomore went the distance, allowing one run on five hits, and he struck out five. Most impressively, Olmo retired 15 of the final 18 batters he faced.
Westchester actually trailed for a short time as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a five-run rally during the top of the third gave WCC all the offense they would need. With the bases loaded, Giordano reached on an error, scoring
Jose Delacruz (New York, NY/George Washington HS) to tie the game.
Paul Franzese (Somers, NY/Somers HS) followed with a bases-clearing triple to make it 4-1. An error on the next play scored Franzese for the 5-1 lead, which was more than enough for Olmo.
Westchester CC, now 18-9 overall and 10-2 in both Mid Hudson Conference and Region XV play, returns to action on Thursday, April 26 to begin a crucial four-game series with Sullivan Community College. The Vikings and Generals will play single games at Viking Stadium on Thursday and Friday at 3:30 p.m. before a doubleheader at Sullivan on Saturday.
