Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Barking Up the Wrong Tree: Galeano's Heroics, Dominant Defense leads Men's Soccer past Bulldogs for 2-0 start

(Valhalla, NY) - Freshman Luis Galeano (Maramoneck, NY/Rye Neck HS) notched his second goal of the season, a spectacular finish off of a crossing pass from freshman Jose Tovar (Yonkers, NY/Riverside HS), and the Viking defense enjoyed a second straight dominant effort as the Westchester Community College Men's Soccer team improved to 2-0 with a 2-0 win over visiting Bergen Community College on Friday afternoon at Barrett Field. The win allows WCC to finish the 2018 season undefeated against non-region competition.

Despite a strong possession advantage, and a commanding edge in shots, the game was neck and neck for the first 50 minutes as the teams were tied 0-0 at halftime. However, the possession edge turned into goals for the Vikings during the final 40 minutes of play as Tovar found Galeano off of a fantastic crossing pass at 50:23 for the 1-0 lead. A little more than 20 minutes later, Franco Ladron De Guevarra (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) doubled the lead, scoring his second goal of the season on an almost identical play when a Chris Vallejo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville HS) crossing pass found Guevarra's foot, and the sophomore promptly one-timed the ball to the back of the net to make it 2-0.

From there, the Vikings defense allowed the hosts to cruise to victory as freshman goalkeeper Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/Colegio Marista Pio XII) was asked to make only two saves. Defenders Leonardo Vargas (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) and William Morais (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) were stellar on the back-end.

Overall, Westchester finished the game with 20 shots, while Bergen had five attempts. The Vikings also had seven corner kicks to Bergen's single corner kick effort.

With their non-region schedule behind them, Westchester Community College returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 when the Vikings host Monroe-Bronx for their 2018 Region XV opener. The game begins at 4:00 p.m.
