(West Windsor, NJ) - If the first part of the 2019-2020 men's basketball season at Westchester Community College was marked by the Vikings gaining big early leads, only to see the advantage evaporate, as 2019 turns into 2020, the narrative could be changing to the Vikings playing at their best once they grab the lead. An incredible seven Vikings scored in double figures, and Westchester shot 49% from the floor as Westchester CC crushed Catonsville Community College, 101-57 on Sunday afternoon to close the Mercer College Mixer. With their second straight victory, Westchester is now 9-4 for the 2019-2020 season.
It was a battle early as there were five ties and three lead changes during the early part of the first half, but a 27-0 Viking run put Westchester ahead for good. The Vikings led 48-23 at halftime, increased the lead to 50 during the second half, and never looked back.
For the second straight game, freshmen
Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) and
Justin Mazyck (Bronx, NY/Stevenson HS) led Westchester in scoring, each scoring 15 points, while Mazyck added six rebounds. Also for the Vikings, freshman
Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) added 14 points, while sophomore
Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) added 13. Fleurimond also grabbed nine rebounds.
Three Vikings scored 10 points apiece with
Willie Davis (Bronx, NY/Logan HS),
Jahmir Appleton (Bronx, NY/Eagle Academy), and
James Brady (Yonkers, NY/Mount Saint Michael) each got into double digits.
Westchester forced 26 turnovers, while committing only 20, while owning a 46-34 edge on the boards.
Westchester returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 10 when the Vikings visit Ulster Community College for a 7:00 p.m. Region XV contest.
