Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

A Tov Act to Follow: Men's Soccer Captures Third Straight Win, 3-1 over Kingsborough behind Tovar's first career tally

(Brooklyn, NY) - An All-Conference Midfielder during the 2018 campaign who seems to be everywhere on the field for 90 minutes each game, there is very little that sophomore Jose Tovar (Yonkers, NY/Riverside HS) has not contributed to the Westchester Community College Men's Soccer team during an outstanding playing career in Valhalla. And after Tuesday's 3-1 win over Kingsborough Community College, the list of what has not been accomplished is even shorter. In the 23rd minute, Tovar found the back of the net for the first time during his outstanding Viking career, putting Westchester up 2-0 en route to a 3-1 win over Kingsborough Community College during a game played in Brooklyn, New York.

With their third straight win, Westchester is now 4-1 overall, and 3-1 in Region XV play.

After winning 8-1 over the Wave in monsoon-like conditions a year ago, Westchester went up against a vastly improved Kingsborough (0-2, 0-2 Region XV) team, and downed the Wave for at least the eighth consecutive time dating back to 2012 thanks to offensive fireworks early, followed by a stout defensive effort as the game moved along that saw Kingsborough register only 10 shots for the game, and kept Kingsborough off of the board for the final 65 minutes of play.

Freshman Tuane Tapper (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) opened scoring in the 15th minute, netting his fifth goal of the season thanks to a nifty assist from Jason Almedia Da Cruz (Yonkers, NY/Escola Secundaria Olavo Moniz (Cape Verde) for a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, freshman Tyrone Malango (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) found Tovar open near the goal, and Tovar converted the opportunity to make it a 2-0 lead. After Kingsborough scored in the 25th minute to make things closer, freshman Luis Madriz (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored his second goal of the season, off of an assist by Juan Torres (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) for the 3-1 final.

Sophomore Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/Colegio Marista Pio XII) made eight saves for his third win of the 2019 season.

Overall, Westchester out-shot Kingsborough 12-10, and were close on several other scoring opportunities, but were called offsides seven times.

Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, September 21 when the Vikings travel to face defending NJCAA Region XV Champion Nassau Community College at 4:00 p.m. The Lions eliminated Westchester from the 2018 NJCAA Region XV Championship Semifinals with a 3-0 win on October 24, 2018, and are currently ranked #3 in the NJCAA among Division III Men's Soccer programs.
