(Warwick, RI) - Freshman
Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored a career-high 24 points, and freshman
Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) added 18 points, as the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team earned its seventh straight win with an 88-87 win over Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday night during the opening round of the CCRI Tournament. With the win, the Vikings are now 14-4.
Westchester enjoyed an incredible first half against a strong CCRI squad, scoring 51 points over the first 20 minutes to take a 51-34 lead into halftime.
However, final 20 minutes were a completely different story as CCRI (10-5) when on a tremendous run, outscoring Westchester 27-11 over the first nine minutes of the second half to make it a 62-61 WCC lead.
From there, the final 11 minutes of regulation were simply wild. Westchester led 76-73 as the final second wound down, but a CCRI buzzer-beating three-pointer tied the game, and forced overtime. In the extra session, Westchester quickly made it an 82-77 lead, but CCRI kept battling back. Finally, with CCRI trying to beat the buzzer with the game-winning basket, Moore grabbed a loose ball, and completed a breakaway lay-up to all but seal the game with 14 seconds remaining. From there, the hosts were able to make it a one-point game once again, but they would get no further.
Freshman
Jahmir Appleton (Bronx, NY/Eagle Academy) added 12 points, while sophomore
James Brady (Yonkers, NY/Mount St. Michael) added nine points.
Westchester CC returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 12 when the Vikings close the CCRI Tournament against Roxbury Community College at 2:00 p.m.
