(Suffern, NY) - Fielding one of the youngest teams in the NJCAA, if the home stretch of the 2019-2020 season is a sign of things to come for the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team, this terrific group of freshman is going to make things mighty interesting as an outstanding core achieves veteran status. Two nights after freshman accounted for 57 of the Vikings' 73 points during Westchester's biggest win of the 2020 component of their schedule, six WCC freshman combined for 60 points alone as Westchester defeated Rockland Community College, 86-77 on Thursday night at Rockland CC.
With their third straight win, the Vikings are now 19-5 for the 2019-2020 season, including a 5-1 record against Mid-Hudson Conference/NJCAA Region XV competition. The win marked the sixth straight game that the Vikings have outscored Rockland CC since Westchester returned to varsity status.
This time around, it was not nearly as easy as the first time these two teams met, when Westchester opened up a 61-28 halftime lead en route to a 95-59 win on Nov. 21, 2019, as Westchester fell behind early, and trailed 38-26 at halftime. However, the Vikings stormed back to outscore the hosts 60-39 during the final 20 minutes to secure their 12th win during their last 13th game.
Freshman
Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS), who has been brilliant for several long stretches of the season, was at his very best on Thursday, scoring a career-high 27 points, including five three pointers. Fellow freshman
Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS), who has been simply dominant as of late, had another big game with 22 points, one shy of his career high.
Also for the Vikings, sophomore
Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) added 14 points. All 12 Vikings who played scored at least one point during the game.
Westchester CC will look to earn its 20th win for the second time during three seasons as the Vikings travel to Sullivan Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 11 to face the third-ranked Generals. Westchester Community College scored one of the biggest upsets of the 2019-2020 season at any level when the Vikings defeated Sullivan 70-61 on Dec. 14.
