(Valhalla, NY) - Facing what would be their first three-game losing streak since the 2016, the Westchester Community College picked the right game to return to form on Saturday afternoon. With a 23-game Mid-Hudson Conference winning streak on the line, the Vikings scored twice during the first five minutes, and then cruised to an 8-0 win over Orange Community College on Saturday afternoon at Barrett Field. With their 24th straight conference win, Westchester is now 3-3 overall, 3-3 in NJCAA Region XV play, and 2-0 against Mid-Hudson Conference competition.
Westchester CC came out with a plan to keep the ball moving on Saturday, and it paid dividends in a hurry as freshman
Oscar Umanzor (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) headed a crossing pass from
Bayron Goff (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roosevelt HS) to the upper corner for a 1-0 lead only 3:42 into the game. 1:14 later, Goff converted a beautiful long ball from
Isaias Argueta (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) for his third goal of the season, and a 2-0 lead.
After the teams spent a long stretch played closer to the midfield, the Vikings closed the first half on an incredible run, scoring six times during a span shorter than 20 minutes to all but put the game away. Argueta scored in transition thanks to an
Eduardo Vazquez (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) long pass to make it 3-0 at 24:45. After going 10 minutes without a goal, Westchester scored twice in 18 seconds, and three times in a span of 1:40 to make it 6-0. Freshman
Alejandro Torres (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) started things at 34:48, when he blasted a direct kick from 10 yards outside the box into the upper right corner to make it 4-0. 18 seconds later, sophomore
Juan Torres (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) found sophomore
Robert McDonald (Bronx, NY/Glenmuir) with a long transition pass, and McDonald raced past the Colt defense and finished the play to make it 5-0. 1:19 after that, freshman
Michael Echeverria (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) crossed a pass that found McDonald's foot, and the speedy forward found the back of the net to make it 6-0.
A McDonald pass at 41:31 found Umanzor for a breakaway, that Umanzor converted for his second goal of the game to make it 7-0, and freshman
Andrew Huyhua (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) took advantage of a turn-over by the Orange CC goalkeeper to tap in his first career goal at 44:08 for Westchester's eighth - and final - goal.
McDonald finished with five points after his two-goal, one assist afternoon. Umanzor scored twice, while Argueta and Goff each had a goal and an assist.
Westchester CC owned a 29-5 edge in shots, and took 10 corner kicks, compared to one for Orange CC (2-5, 2-2).
Westchester Community College returns to action on Monday, Oct. 4 when the Vikings host Kingsborough Community College for a 4:00 Region XV game. The Vikings have won seven straight games against Kingsborough CC, dating back to 2013.
