(Valhalla, NY) - It took a little while, but the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team finally found a way to finish what they started ... and they did it just in time for their biggest game of the 2021-2022 season. Freshman
Eisaiah Murphy (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) scored 30 points for the first time in his career, and sophomore
Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) chipped in 10 points, five assists, and four steals, as the Vikings improved to 5-0 with a 91-36 win over visiting Rockland Community College on Tuesday night at Viking Gymnasium. The win gave the Vikings their first win against NJCAA Region XV and Mid-Hudson Conference competition.
The key to this game was not the fast start - that saw Westchester score the game's first 23 points, over a span of 6:43 to all but put the game away - but instead was the way the Vikings played once they appeared to have the game put away. During Westchester's last two wins, the Vikings jumped out to big early leads, only to see their opponents chip away, and get back into the game. That was not the case on Tuesday night. Rockland (1-3, 0-2) brought the game back to a 20-point deficit with 8:05 to play in the first half, but from there, Westchester scored the next 12 points to remove any doubt. The Vikings led 47-12 at halftime, shooting 51% during the first half, and forcing 19 Rockland turnovers, compared to seven for Westchester.
The second half saw much of the same as Westchester led by as many as 57 points, and the Vikings have not broken 90 points during every game this season. Most impressively, not a single Rockland player scored in double digits.
10 different Vikings scored during the rout, as sophomore
Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) had nine points and four rebounds, while freshman
Mekhi Purser (Bronx, NY/Pelham Lab HS) barely missed a double-double with nine points, and eight rebounds.
Also for Westchester, freshman
Omar Nkonde (New York, NY/Thurgood Marshall Academy) had four points, four rebounds, and six blocked shots.
Westchester shot 45% for the game, compared to 24% for Rockland, and the Vikings forced 33 turnovers, while committing only 13.
Up next for the Vikings is a trip to Sullivan Community College, where Westchester will meet the seventh-ranked Generals on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
