Worth the Wait: 702 days later, Women's Volleyball Returns to Play in Triumphant Fasion

Sep 10

Box Score (Middletown, NY) - Under most circumstances, a team going 702 days between wins is hardly cause for celebration. But, these were not typical circumstances, and the win was hardly ordinary. Taking to the court for the first time since the conclusion of the 2019 season, the Westchester Community College Women's Volleyball team began Thursday evening's season-opener thrilled to simply be back in action ...  but by the time their season-opening match against Orange Community College was over, the Vikings had set the stage for what could be a special 2021 season, sweeping traditional conference and region powerhouse Orange CC, 3-0.

Westchester downed the Colts 25-16, 25-19, and 25-14 to earn their first win over Orange since a 3-2 triumph on Oct. 23, 2018 to capture the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship. The win was Westchester's first against any opponent since Oct. 8, 2019 when Westchester swept Sullivan CC 3-0. The Vikings' 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Interestingly, Westchester's last four wins have been 3-0 sweeps.

On a roster filled with almost exclusively newcomers, it was the team's lone returner from the 2019 season who led the way as sophomore Stefania Rinaldi (White Plains, NY/Valhalla HS) enjoyed an incredible match with six kills, five service aces, and 10 assists. From there, it was a slew of rookies making quite an impact durig their first career match.

Freshman Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) led the Vikings with nine kills, and added two assists and two service aces. Fellow freshman Ireana Olivo (Yonkers, NY/Maria Regina) had eight kills, eight digs, and three service aces.

Also for Westchester, AngelaRosa Garofalo (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) had seven kills, four service aces, and four digs, while Isabella Masucci (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla HS) added seven assists.

Westchester CC returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14 when the Vikings host Rockland Community College for their 2021 home opener.
