(Valhalla, NY) - During a typical college baseball game, when one team reaches 10 runs during a single game, it is considered a noteworthy event to represent one of the biggest games of the season at the plate. The way the Westchester Community College bats have found the ball since March turned into April, the Vikings are beginning to make such an offensive outburst downright commonplace. For the ninth time during the last 10 games, and seventh straight game overall, Westchester CC broke into double digits - twice - this time on home turf, as Westchester CC downed Orange Community College, 13-7 and 15-0 on Saturday at Vikings Field.
With the wins, Westchester CC is now 18-11 overall, and 7-2 in NJCAA Region XV and Mid-Hudson Conference play.
Westchester has now batted into double digits 12 times during the 2022 season, after only doing so eight times during their last full season of play (2019) ... and there are still 11 regular season games to be played.
In addition to the offensive fireworks, the 13-7 win to open the doubleheader marked the 350th win of Head Coach
Billy McClure's illustrious career.
The opener saw Westchester score four times during the bottom of the first inning, and never look back, as eight different Vikings combined for 13 hits. Freshman
AJ Falciglia (Elmsford, NY/Stepinac) continued his incredible 2022 campaign as he went 3 for 5 - with two doubles and a walk - and drove in five runs. Freshman
Michael Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS), freshman
Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) and freshman
Patrick Poggi (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff HS) added two hits apiece, with Ambrosecchia scoring three times, and Poggi notching his first career home run.
Freshman
Thomas Mark (Patterson, NY/Brewster HS) improved to 3-1, allowing two earned runs over five innings, and freshman
Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) earned his first career save.
The nightcap was all Westchester from the start as the Vikings led 6-0 after the first inning, 10-0 after two innings, and 14-0 after three, as the Vikings scored 15 runs on only eight hits. Falciglia went 2 for 2 with five RBI's and three runs scored, including his second home run of the 2022 season. Poggi, and freshman
Weston Baronian (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) drove in two runs apiece, and Ambrosecchia went 2 for 3 with three runs scored.
Freshman Matt Jacobson (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley HS) earned his first career win in style, tossing a complete game one-hit shutout, striking out five.
For Head Coach
Billy McClure, who has led the Vikings to become a national powerhouse at the NJCAA Division II level during his 11+ seasons at the helm, win #350 marks yet another milestone during a remarkable career, during which he has led Westchester CC to at least 23 wins during every full season. The Vikings enter this week's action on the verge of getting to #23 with two weeks to play. Up next for Westchetser CC is a home game against Sullivan CC on Tuesday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m.
