Game Recap: Baseball |

Ulster CC Sweeps Westchester CC in Baseball Doubleheader

(Valhalla, NY) - Freshman Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) went a combined 4 for 7 over two games, and freshman Thomas Browne (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville HS) allowed only one earned runs over seven innings, but the Westchester Community College Baseball team was swept by Ulster Community College, 7-4 and 13-3 on Saturday afternoon at Viking Field. With the losses, Westchester CC is now 19-14 overall, and 8-5 against NJCAA Region XV competition.

Ulster (15-9, 11-4) won three of the four games played against the Vikings this season.

The opener was a defensive nightmare for the Vikings as Ulster scored six runs during the top of the first inning, five of which were unearned. From that point on, Westchester outscored the Senators 4-1, but was unable to complete the comeback. Freshman AJ Falciglia (Elmsford, NY/Stepinac) made it a 6-1 game when he tripled home Frias during the third inning. An inning later, a Ryan Osso (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester HS) single drove in Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) to make it 6-2.

After Ulster made it 7-2 during the top of the fifth inning, Westchester made it 7-3 at the bottom of the frame when Frias scored on a CJ Spence (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) sacrifice fly. The Vikings scored their final run of the game during the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman Weston Baronian (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) belted his fourth home run of the season, for the 7-4 final.

Four Vikings had multiple hits as Frias went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Baronian went 2 for 4, Falciglia went 2 for 3, and Anthony Dolce (North Salem, NY/North Salem HS) went 2 for 3.

Browne was not hit hard at all during the game, but was the victim of  five untimely Vikings errors. He allowed six hits over seven innings, struck out 11, and walked only three.

The nightcap saw Ulster score runs during four out of five innings to force the five-inning final. Down 2-0 right away, the Vikings cut the deficit in half during the bottom of the first inning, when Falciglia drove home Baronian with a sacrifice fly. Down 8-1 during the bottom of the fourth inning, Dolce slammed his fifth home run of the season, driving home Hopper, to make it 8-3. But that was as close as Westchester would get. Five different Vikings pitchers allowed 10 earned runs as Westchester has now lost three straight games, after winning six in a row.

Westchester CC returns to action on Sunday, April 24 when the Vikings welcome Sullivan Community College to Vikings Field for a 12:00 pm doubleheader. The opener will have Westchester CC play as the home team, and Sullivan will be the home team for the nightcap.
