Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

A Thunderous Victory - Vega's Late Strike Jolts the Vikings Late

September, 14, 2022
Valhalla, NY – The WCC Men's Soccer team made it two wins in a row as they scored just in the nick of time to break a late 1-1 tie and send everyone home happy with the victory versus the visiting Tigers of Queensborough Community College.
Just four minutes into the match, the game was delayed for about an hour due to a passing thunderstorm that chased everyone off the field to find shelter and a dry spot.  After a heavy downpour the game resumed and it was Queensborough that struck first, netting a ball that was loose in front of the goal at the at the 10-minute mark.  However, Sophomore Johan Escalante (Yonkers, NY/Riverside HS) scored the equalizer 22 minutes into play to tie the game at 1-1.
As the game wore on, darkness was looming and it was unclear if overtime would be played, if it was needed.  With neither team getting many good scoring chances, the game remained tied until the 88th minute, where Freshmen Alejandro Vega's shot found the back of the net to give the Vikings a dramatic go-ahead goal with just seconds remaining in regulation.
The Vikings defense and midfield play stood tall as Freshman Goalkeeper Nicolas Nunez faced only 7 shots and made 3 saves.  With the win, the Vikings move to 2-1 on the season and return to action on Thursday, September 15th as they travel to Poughkeepsie HS to take on Dutchess Community College at 4pm.
