Westchester Mourns The Loss of Long-Time Bowling And Golf Coach Walter Hauck

Jul 31

Valhalla, NY – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of long time Head Coach Walter Hauck. Walter was not only a staple here in the Athletic Department as the head coach for Men's and Women's Bowling and Golf programs, but a long-time member of the campus community as the Physical Education Technician.

Hauck, a Valhalla High School graduate, would move onto Syracuse University as a Journalism Major and find himself under the wing of the Orange's Head Men's Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim as the team's manager.
He came to Westchester in 1979 and held his position in the Physical Education Department as the Technician overseeing numerous classes throughout his time. Walter would get himself into Viking Athletics keeping statistics, announcing games, and eventually coaching. An avid bowler and golfer himself, Hauck would take over as the head coach for the Men's and Women's Bowling and Golf programs. He also took the position of President of the Bowling Coaches Association in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for 16 years as well as becoming the Commissioner of the Mid-Hudson Conference. Walter would be inducted to the Westchester Athletics Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

He would retire from the Physical Education Department at SUNY Westchester in 2022 after 43 years of service to the college. Hauck continued to hold the Head Coaching roles, Commissioner, and President of the Bowling Coaches Association after his retirement.

Walter touched the lives of everyone he was around and kept his life simple yet abundant. His love for traveling around the world, the New York Yankees, the Buffalo Bills, Stella beer, and the Syracuse Orange could not be matched and will be sorely missed by colleagues, family, and friends.

Arraignments have yet to be announced at this time however a memorial service will be planned within the campus community in the coming weeks to honor and remember Coach Hauck.
