The SUNY Westchester baseball team fell just short in their efforts to wrap up their strong spring break trip on Friday as they dropped a pair of games to Northern Essex, 5-4 and 3-2. The Vikings had their chances in both games but they ultimately could not get over the hump to secure either match up. Â
In game one, WCC fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, though a few defensive mis plays allowed for runs to score. The Knights tacked on a run in the 2nd to put Westchester in an early hole. But as they often have, the team continued to fight back. Freshman,
Randel Weisner smacked a double in the bottom of the 3rd inning to score two and the Vikings pulled within a run at 4-3. An inning later, a base hit by
Nick Vendola tied the score at 4. Â
Northern Essex scratched out an unearned run in the top of the 6th. Westchester put two runners on in the bottom of the inning and during a double steal the Knights third baseman made a diving stop on a ball smashed by
Freddy Heymach that looked destined for right field. He recorded the out effectively putting an end to the threat. Â
Mike Dawson shook off 6 walks in a solid outing. Though he gave up 5 runs, only one was earned. He pitched 6 innings giving up 8 hits while striking out 3. Heymach and Vendola were both 2 for 3 in the game and each stole a base. Â
In game 2, Northern Essex jumped out to a 3-0 lead once again. In the top of the 4th, after
Peter Portugues single,
Lucas Feliciano blasted a 2-run homer to get the Vikings closer. The Knights did a nice job of limiting the damage from there and Westchester was unable to find the tying run. Â
Vasili Kelesidis started for WCC and pitched well over 6 innings. He gave up 3 earned runs on just 3 hits to while striking out 5. Â
Westchester finished their trip 6-4 for the week. They return to action on Tuesday, March 25th as they travel to Raritan Valley for a non-region matchup. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm. Â
