Vikings Split Doubleheader with Mustangs

Yesterday, Westchester Community College took on the Monroe University Mustangs in a doubleheader at Vikings Field. They won the first game, but came up short in the second.

The first game started off with Monroe scoring two runs in the first inning, taking the lead right away. The game would stay quiet at 2-0 until the fifth inning when Westchester tied it up with two runs. The Mustangs quickly responded with two runs of their own to take the lead once again. In the seventh and final inning, the Vikings secured the lead once and for all with three runs, ending the game with a score of 5-4. Pitching all seven innings for the Vikings was Vasilios Kelesidis, who had four strikeouts. Additionally, only 2 out of the 4 runs by Monroe were earned. Elijah Villanueva would go 1 for 2 with 2 runs. Freddy Heymach also had 2 runs in the game, followed by Nick Vendola who had 1.

The following game would prove to be more challenging for the Vikings. They started off with a disadvantage being down by four after the first two innings. In the fifth inning, Monroe managed to make another three runs, making the score 9-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Westchester attempted to close that gap by scoring four runs. Still, it was not enough to recover from the deficit early on. The game ended with a Vikings loss, 9-5. Brandon Hernandez was 2 for 3 with 2 runs. The other three runs are credited to Nick Vendola, Randel Weisner, and Peter Portugues

Next up on the schedule, WCC will take on SUNY Orange back at home at Vikings Field this Tuesday, 4PM.
