Vikings Win Last 2 Games and Clinch Regular Season Conference Championship!

May 4

Valhalla, NY - In a dominant weekend of baseball, The Vikings of Westchester Community College captured the regular season conference championship and the Number 1 seed heading into playoffs.

Friday they took on Ulster Community College for the 5th time this season. In this last matchup it was all WCC as the bats were hot and the pitching was sharp.

The Vikings struck first in the opening inning, as Mercer Jordan(Beacon, NY/Beacon High School) drove in a run on a groundout before John Avellino(New Rochelle, NY/Salesian High School) ripped a two-run single to set the tone. One inning later, Westchester delivered the knockout blow. Austin Jorgensen's(Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady Of Lourdes High School) RBI single ignited a six-run surge, capped by Jordan's towering three-run homer to left that blew the game wide open.

Peter Portugues(Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane High School) added to the power display with a solo shot in the third, while the Vikings piled up 14 hits in a relentless offensive showing. Jorgensen led the charge with three hits, and Avellino, Jason Jackson(LaGrange, NY/Arlington High School), and Freddy Heymach(Pawling, NY/Pawling High School) each added multi-hit efforts.

On the mound, Christian Peralta(East Elmhurst, NY/Christ The King) was dominant, firing five shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out six to seal the run-rule victory. Not only that but this secured the regular season conference championship for the Vikings and a #1 seed heading into the Region 15 Tournament.

However, the work this weekend wasn't done. The Vikings hosted sophomore and thanked a truly tremendous class on their final regular season game. A nice ceremony took place before the game where they honored 13 sophomores for all of their contributions over the last 2 seasons. They will truly be missed.

When the ceremony wrapped there was still some baseball to play and the Vikings dominated from the first pitch all they way until the end.

Westchester  broke the game open in stunning fashion Saturday, erupting for 10 runs in the second inning to power past SUNY Colts, 14–1.

The Vikings sent a barrage of hitters to the plate in the decisive frame, piling up RBI hits from Avellino, Jackson, Chris Echols(Somers, NY/John F. Kennedy Preparatory School), Heymach, Jordan, and Oscar Almanzar(Dominican Republic) to turn an early lead into a rout.

Vasili Kelesidis(Stamford, CT/Stamford High School) handled the rest, delivering four solid innings while allowing just one run, and Reilly Deneen(North Salem, NY/North Salem High School) finished it off with a scoreless relief appearance.

Echols led the offense with three RBIs, while Avellino, Echols, Portugues, and Jordan each recorded multiple hits. Westchester backed it up with flawless defense, sealing a dominant, all-around performance.

With the regular season wrapping the Vikings will now host the opening round of the Region 15 tournament as the overall #1 seed. They will take on the Colts of Orange Community College this Friday at 3:30 PM home at Vikings Field. Come out and support your Vikings as they look to take their first step to getting back to the top of Region 15!
