Box Score May 21, 2017 – Valhalla, NY
2017 was a year of many successes for the Vikings Baseball team. Early on, they played well versus non-region opponents and then finished the regular season as the top seed going into the Region XV tournament. They then went undefeated in the Regional playoffs and advanced to the District Finals on Sunday.
After defeating Mercyhurst on Saturday, WCC came into Eastern District Championship having to win two versus UConn Avery Point to advance to the College World Series. Because they lost the coin toss to determine who bats last, Westchester played the game as the away team.
The Vikings got on the board first with three runs in the first.
Steve Guzman (JFK HS/Bronx, NY) knocked in two with an RBI triple. He would later score on a ball out of play to take an early 3-0 lead. The Pointers got one back in the bottom of the inning though, to bring it to 3-1. Westchester plated another run in the 4
th to take a 4-1 lead when
Brian Corporan (HS for Environmental Studies/Bronx, NY) drew a bases loaded walk.
Triston Olmo (Ardsley HS/Ardsley, NY) got the start in Game 1 and was solid through six innings giving up just one earned run. However, Olmo ran into trouble in the 7
th after a lead off bunt and a walk. The Vikings couldn't hold the lead though as a 3-run homer by the Pointers tied the game at 4. A few batters later, Avery Point took the lead on a ground ball through the hole on the left side. The offensive onslaught kept coming as they strung together several base hits to extend the lead to 9-4.
After hitting early, the Vikings were only able to post two hits after the 5
th inning, and were unable to close the gap once Avery Point took the lead. They would go on to lose 10-4. For the game,
Steve Guzman was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
Alonso Tenya went 1 for 2 with two walks. Olmo pitched 6 plus innings giving up 3 earned runs while scattering 4 hits in the no decision.
The loss ends what was a successful season for WCC as they finish as the Eastern District Runners up with a 38-13 overall record on the season.
