Champions! - Vikings Volleyball Goes Where No Team Has Gone Before

Nov 3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 November 2, 2025 – Poughkeepsie, NY
To say that the Westchester Vikings Women's Volleyball team has had a historic season would be an understatement.  The team finished the regular season with a 17-3 overall record and capped it off with wins over Rockland and Dutchess to take home their first Mid-Hudson Conference Championship since 2018.

On Thursday, WCC hosted Dutchess again in the first round of the Region 15 Tournament as the #4 seed.  The Vikings prevailed in the quarterfinals for the first time in recent memory, defeating the Falcons 3-1 (25-23,28-25, 25-25,25-27).  This set the table for the team to have an opportunity to qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament. Region 15 has two bids to the National Tournament and both the winner and the runner-up advance as separate District Champions.

Westchester would face the top seeded Nassau Lions, a team that had handed the Vikings one of their only 3 losses in the regular season.  That match came at the end of a back to back against Monroe Bronx on September 27th where they had to battle the Express for 5 games.   WCC fell in 5 against Nassau on that day by the most narrow of margins.  However, by the end of the season, the Lions had risen to the #1 seed in the tournament by virtue of beating an undefeated FIT at the end of the regular season.  Nassau rose to the #15 team in the country according to the final regular season poll.

The Vikings battled in the first game as they matched the Lions point for point early.  As the game wore on they fell into a deficit they were unable to overcome and lost 20-25.  But like the team had many times during the year, they bounced back, winning game two 25-20 and were even more dominant in game 3, winning 25-15.  Westchester closed it out in game four in a similar fashion, winning 25-17 in a statement victory that punched their ticket to the National Championship Tournament.
But the team was not done.  Monroe University-Bronx upset FIT in their semi-final, winning 3-2 to set up an evenly matched Championship.  This time, it was the Vikings to take the first game, winning 25-19.  But the Express fought right back taking game two, 18-25.  Game three was a thriller with neither team gaining any sizable advantage but WCC converted on a 24-23 game point to take a 2-1 lead in the match.  At this point, the Region Championship was within their reach and they closed it out in dominant fashion, winning game four, 25-15 to earn the Region 15 and North Atlantic District A titles at the same time.

It was the first Region 15 Women's Volleyball Championship and first bid to the NJCAA National Tournament in school history!  Sophomores Yulis Vidal (Garnerville, NY/North Rockland HS) and Ashley Webber (Patterson, NY/Carmel HS) were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Sophomore Ziacera Sexton (Pomona, NY/North Rockland HS) earned the Most Valuable Player Award.

The Vikings will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on November 13th for a chance to win a National Championship.  The NJCAA selection show will held the week of November 3rd, where the team will find out their seed and who they will face in the opening round.
