Men's Soccer falls 3-2 to Suffolk CC in heartbreaker

Oct 5

Box Score (Valhalla, NY) - In what was a crucial Region XV clash among post-season favorites, the Westchester Community College Men's Soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at the hands of rival Suffolk Community College on Thursday afternoon at Barrett Field. With the loss, WCC falls to 6-3 overall, and 5-3 in Region XV play.

After a back-and-forth start that saw both team earn their share of chances without a goal, the Vikings broke through in the 24th minute when Joel Arevalo blasted a direct kick from outside the box into the upper corner to put WCC up 1-0. 15 minutes later, a scramble in front of the Suffolk goal saw Franco Ladron de Guevarra gobble up a rebound, and fire a shot into the goal to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. The score would remain the same into halftime.

However, the second half saw the tide turn as Suffolk (9-4-1, 6-1 Region XV) applied tremenous pressure throughout the half. The Sharks found the net in the 48th minute, and then scored in the 64th and 79th minute to take the lead for good. Despite several WCC chances late, the Vikings were unable to find the equalizer.

Westchester CC returns home on Saturday, October 7 when the Vikings welcome BMCC for a 12:00 start. BMCC is currently undefeated and sits atop Region XV.
