Eduardo Ceja (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) recorded his first career goal, and fellow freshman
Brian Guaman (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) enjoyed the best game of his young career, making 12 saves, but the Westchester Community College Men's Soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback to Suffolk Community College on Saturday at Suffolk CC. With the loss, the Vikings are now 2-2 overall, and 2-2 in NJCAA Region XV play.
11 minutes into the game, the host Sharks (3-2, 2-2) were awarded a penalty kick, which was promptly converted to give Suffolk a 1-0 lead. That penalty kick would prove to be a critical play during an otherwise even game.
Less than three minutes after the opening goal, Ceja tied the score off of a beautiful pass from sophomore
Juan Torres (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) to make it 1-1. However, the Sharks scored during during a span of fewer than four minutes midway through the second half to take a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish. Torres made things interesting with 12:31 to play, scoring his first goal of the season after he finished a scramble in front, but that was as close as the Vikings would get.
Guaman was outstanding, stopping 12 out of 15 shots on goal, with a few spectacular saves mixed in there.
The Vikings were out-shot 15-8and Suffolk had six corner kicks, compared to Westchester's three.
Westchester CC returns to a to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29, when the Vikings face 2020 NJCAA Region XV Champion Monroe-Bronx. The game will take place at 1:30 p.m. on the turf of SUNY Maritime in Throggs Neck, New York.
