Valhalla, NY – The Vikings both thrived and struggled this week scoring 5 goals versus Bronx on Tuesday, but then found it difficult to convert scoring chances against Suffolk on Thursday. The team came away with a 5-1 victory versus the Broncos, but then was unable to score and prevent the Sharks from converting, as they fell 5-1.
On Tuesday, the Vikings scored early and often as they went into halftime with a 4-1 lead.
Exon Umanzor (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) notched the hat trick with 3 goals in the match. The two Westchester keepers
Israel Pardo (Bedford Hills, NY/Fox Lane HS) and
Nicolas Nunez (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) shared time in goal, notching 4 saves in between them against just one goal against.
Thursday was a highly anticipated match-up as Suffolk has been in the national polls all season long and currently receiving top 10 votes. Having played well against top teams to date, the Vikings were hopeful a strong showing against the Sharks would move them up the region rankings. But on a soggy field, Westchester was unable to muster the offense needed to stay in the game.
Neither team could score on a few early chances but Suffolk converted with about 10 minutes to play in the first half off of a corner kick. Having played solid the defense in the first period, the Vikings were hopeful that they'd have a chance to equalize in the 2
nd. But the Sharks scored two more quick goals, again on corner kicks to extend the lead. Westchester was unable to recover or stop the Shark attack from there and fell 5-0.
The game marked the last regular season home game for the Vikings, and sophomores were celebrated at a pre-game ceremony. Graduating sophomores include:
