Dr. Hankin was born and raised in New York and is a product of the New York City Public School system. After graduating high school, he enrolled at the City College of New York. There he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science. From there he went onto Columbia University's Graduate Faculties and Teacher's College where he received his Master os Arts in History and his Doctor of Education in Administration of Higher Education.
After teaching at the City University of New York from 1962 to 1965, Dr. Hankin began his career in administration. After only a year and a half stint as Director and Dean of Continuing Education at Hartford College, the Board of Trustees requested that at the age of 26 he take over the position of President. He held that position for four and a half years until he took over the Presidency of Westchester Community College, a postilion he held until December 31, 2014. Dr. Hankin became the longest serving Community College President in America (42 years). He took a Community College with an enrollment of 4,000 students and turned it into a college where over 13,000 students are educated.
Throughout his esteemed career, Dr. Hankin has received several honors. He was a member, chairman or consultant for accreditation teams across the country and Puerto Rico. He also participated in several civic and professional organizations, notably being the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges. He is an honorary member of Chi Sigma Mu and Phi Delta Kappa and has won the Distinguished Service Award from both the New York State Association of Two Year Colleges and the SUNY Faculty Council of Community Colleges. In addition to all awards and honors, Dr. Hankin has had over six dozen of his writings published.
