Todd Sumpter began his illustrious wrestling career at Westchester Community College career in 1978; he would leave as one of the most decorated wrestlers to ever pass though the campus. Todd wasted little time making his presence felt in the Westchester wrestling community, becoming the Region XV Champion and a National Finalist in 1978.The next year would prove to be just as successful for Todd. He returned to the Regional Finals; however he was unable to repeat as champion. Sumpter then went to the NJCAA Championships and was again able to make it to the finals. In 1979 he was crowned the National Champion. For his efforts in both 1978 and 1979, he was named to the All Mid-Hudson Conference team.
Along with his tournament successes, Todd was also named a member of the Empire State Games team and traveled to the Pan American Games as a representative of the United States, where he took home a Gold Medal. Following a stellar two years at WCC, the school honored him by retiring his wrestling singlet, which can still be seen in the trophy case in the Physical Education Building today.
