While Johnny Jones never competed for or coached a Westchester Community College athletic team, his indelible mark on the Athletic Department is nonetheless remarkable. For more than a quarter of a century, Jones has been a fixture at WCC Basketball home games, serving as Public Address Announcer. His calls of, “Bang” when a player hits a three-pointer, “He’ll attempt a three-point play, the old-fashioned way,” and other signature calls has made Jones not only a staple at WCC home events, but a legendary figure within the Athletic Department as well.
Jones has been a noted sports figure in the area for most of his life. He was a standout football player at White Plains High School, and attended Hampton Institute on a Boxing scholarship, where he competed for three years and earned the CIAA Championship. He graduated from Hampton with a degree in Speech Pathology.
Jones worked for 30 years for the Town of Greenburgh Youth Services. He currently lives in Elmsford with his wife, Gladys. His brother is Grover “Deacon” Jones, a former member of the Chicago White Sox, who has spent 64 years in professional baseball.
