Hall of Fame
The Westchester Community College Baseball team boasts one of the proudest traditions of any Viking sports program, including 14 Mid-Hudson Conference Championships, eight NJCAA Region XV Championships, and two trips to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament. There are very few individuals who can say they have followed Vikings Baseball since day one, but Phil Caruso is one of them.
Â
A member of the inaugural Westchester CC Baseball team, Caruso had the honor of scoring the first run in program history, and recording the first stolen base as well. During his time in Valhalla, Caruso also served Hall of Famer Ralph Arietta as Team Manager for the WCC Men’s Basketball team for three years, and was a member of the Viking Cross Country team as well.
Â
After graduation, Caruso literally devoted his career to the sport of baseball. He served as Associate Scout for the New York Mets from 1983-88. He also embarked on a coaching career that continues to this day. He was the Head Coach at Garrett College (Maryland), Frederick Community College (Maryland), Frostburg State University (Maryland), and is currently the Head Baseball Coach at Fairmont State University in West Virginia. On top of his induction into the WCC Sports Hall of Fame, Caruso is a member of the Garrett College Hall of Fame and the Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.
