Sean Kenny was born and raised in Dublin Ireland. Growing up he met a young man from Ossining, NY who would become his best friend. So he was familiar with the Westchester area and certain opportunities to play soccer in the US. He was recruited to attend Davis and Elkins Prep in West Virginia and decided to pursue his playing career abroad. WCC Sports Hall of Fame Coach John Yasinsac just happened to run a camp there. With his knowledge of Westchester through his friend, and having met Coach Yaz, Sean decided to attend Westchester and it set him on a path that would change his life.
During his first season with the Vikings in 1982, he led his team to the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship. The Vikings also made a run to the Region 15 Championship game. It was a match that was a heartbreaker for the team, as they lost in the final minute and finished as Region 15 Runners-up. His efforts that season earned him All-American honors.
The following season, the team didn’t fare quite as well, but Sean shined once again. He was again named as an All American for the 1983 season. He is one of very few to earn multiple All American honors in SUNY Westchester history.
For his efforts he earned an athletic scholarship to Keene State in New Hampshire. His success only continued as he was voted as a NCAA All American during his junior and senior years. Combined with his success at Westchester, he is surely one of a select few 4-time All Americans in the history of American collegiate sports.
After graduating from Keene, Sean has enjoyed a long career in the Data Systems industry. However, soccer continued to be an important part of his life. He was the head coach for Men’s Soccer Concordia College for 13 years, over two separate stints. He also was an assistant coach at St. John’s University, where he helped lead the Red Storm to two Big East Championships and the 1996 Men’s Division I National Championship.
Kenny also continued coaching his children through various club teams including FC Westchester. He currently coaches children through the Westchester Flames. He is also a member of the Kean University, New Hampshire Soccer Association and the St. John’s University Hall of Fames.
He currently lives in Mt. Vernon with his wife Lisa, who he met at WCC and is also a Westchester graduate. They have three children, Brian, Nina and Sean, all of whom played soccer growing up.
